My wife and I had this problem with our 2008 Cobalt LT. It was still under the bumper to bumper warranty, thankfully. However, the repair ticket almost made it look like they covered it under the 5 year/100K mile warranty, so you can try that. The problem was that some of the tumblers inside the ignition lock cyllinder (the part into which you slide the key) were damaged/bent. Now the dealer screwed up and didn't cut the new keys properly, so they're redoing that, but it should be solved ...
The ignition lock cylinder on a 2006 Chevy Cobalt is removed by popping off the steering column cover and inserting a screwdriver into the release hole. The cylinder can then be pulled from its housing and replaced.
