With the car on, set your odometer to the odometer reading (as opposed to trip A or trip B).
Turn the car off.
Now hold the same button down and turn on the car. Your dash should show a graphic that is counting down the time until it resets itself. When it says "complete", let go of the button and you are good to go for another 5,000 miles.

The only answer I can find in the manual is when the dashboard "maintenance required" signal appears. I'm thinking it's around 5000 miles, but I don't know for sure, as I just got my 2005 Highlander recently.
