It was supposed to increase the tax revenue of the British Government by levying a tax on the tea shipped to the American Colonists. We all know how that turned out, don't we?

They wanted to get rid of 18 pounds of unsold tea (lol) and the leaders of America had reason to beleive that this act was a maneuver to buy popular support for the taxes already in force. This would als have undercut the buisness of local merchants.
