The number of periods of the longer one is such that 1.6(N+1) = 1.7N

1.6N + 1.6 = 1.7N

1.6 = 0.1N

N = 16 periods.

1.7N = 27.2 seconds

What is a swinging pendulum?

All pendulums swing. They wouldn't be pendulums if they didn't.

What does swinging have to do with physics?

The motion of swinging is an example of forced, damped oscillation. A more simple form of this is simple harmonic oscillation and can be read about here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simple_harmonic_motion

Why do pendulums stop swinging?

A pendulum does not keep swinging because the kinetic energy that it has as it swings is detracted from somewhat by the air. This may be easier to see with a comparison to friction. Air resistance acts on a pendulum swinging through air just as friction acts on an object sliding across a surface, causing it to come to a halt.

Where do you see Pendulums in the real world?

Pendulums are commonly seen in various applications, such as clocks and metronomes, where their regular oscillations are used to keep time. They are also used in seismology to measure the movement of the Earth during earthquakes. In addition, pendulums are utilized in amusement park rides, such as swing rides, to create a thrilling swinging motion.

Why doesn't a pendulum keeps on swinging forever?

Most pendulums are operated by a spring, when the spring looses its tention it can no longer keep the pendulum swinging. Others may work on a different system but the system in not perpetual and will loose its ability to keep the pendulum swinging. As a point of interest you canot use a pendulum in space.

Please give two examples of 'oscillation'?

A clock pendulum swinging back and forth. A weight on a spring moving up and down.

Why do all pendulums swing at the same speed?

What doese oscillation mean?

Oscillation is the repetitive variation, typically in time, of some measure about a central value (often a point of equilibrium) or between two or more different states. Familiar examples include a swinging pendulum and AC power. The term vibration is sometimes used more narrowly to mean a mechanical oscillation but sometimes is used to be synonymous with "oscillation." Oscillations occur not only in physical systems but also in biological systems and in human society.

What are spiritual pendulums used for?

Pendulums are great in spiritual pursuits. They are generally some object of meaning, suspened from a rope or chain. Crystals are often used in pendulum construction. They can be used in divinatory pursuits. Held by the string end with the crystal hanging, one places the crystal over their non-dominant hand. Asking the crystal to show the user a response (which will generally be determined by the direction in which the crystal swings) for yes or no. After finding this out, the user would proceed to ask questions and read the swinging crystal for answers. Pendulums do have other uses in spiritual pursuits. They are often used to guide a user in the direction of, for example negative energy in a home. A good supplier of these objects is www.azuregreen.com
