Answering "http://wiki.answers.com/Q/350_chevy_when_the_timing_mark_are_line_up_what_piston_is_firing" If you are putting a chain and gears on the right way, then #1 has just fired on the compression stroke
line up timing marks from harmonic balancer and timing tab on timing cover
the timing or the firing order? the timing gears have 2 dots that line up when the timing is correct at top dead center. the firing order 18436572 and the cylinders are numbered as following, driver side 1357 and pass side 2468
the firing order of a 6 cyl. Chevy is-----1,5,3,6,2,4 ( this is for an in line 6)
Firing order is 153624, # 1 is front cylinder, distributor rotates clockwise timing: 4BTDC auto trany TDC standard trany point gap is .019 point dwell is 31-34
No the engine isn't ruined. It just wont run because ist is now out of time. The timing belts job is to keep the pistons and compression in line with the firing order of the spark plugs. when the the timing belt is on the car the plug fires when the piston is in the highest position in the cylinder. If the belt is broke then the plug could be firing when the piston is in the lowest position therefore not creating any compression and not allowing the car to crank. You're ok you just need a new belt and put back in time.
A timing mark is usually a white line on the timing belt to sync the firing of cylinders in an engine. You can see this line when the engine is turned off or with a timing light also a strobe light when the engine is running.
IN-LINE? WHAT MODEL CHEVY? The 1992 Chevy 4.3 Liter is a V6 and not an inline 6. The firing order is 1-6-5-4-3-2
1-5-3-6-2-4 same firing order as any Chevrolet in line 6 (aka straight 6)
1-5-3-6-2-4
It could be your off a tooth with your distributor
The typical timing for a 1985 Chevy 454 is 8 degrees before top dead center. The vacuum line removed from the distributor and plugged. The engine warm and idling at 700 rpm.
Connect timing light. remove vacuum line and plug to put engine in base timing. loosen the Distributor hold down, turn the dist. left or right to set it with the timing light. tighten the hold down. replace line. White out makes it easier to see the timing marks. the stock timing is 10 degrees
