The timing belts job is to keep the pistons and compression in line with the firing order of the spark plugs. when the the timing belt is on the car the plug fires when the piston is in the highest position in the cylinder. If the belt is broke then the plug could be firing when the piston is in the lowest position therefore not creating any compression and not allowing the car to crank. You're ok you just need a new belt and put back in time.
