timing could be too far advanced. another sign of timing advanced too far would be that the engine turns over slow or with hard hits.

if it pops at idle, it could be getting too much gas. thread in the idle set screws a little at a time to see if it stops popping. if it doesn't, return the screws to original position.
if it pops above idle, you should look into changing the metering rods and jets, or placing with a smaller carburetor if it pops when you step on the gas its more than likely a worn lob on the cam.
