your plugs may be fouled. pull them and check for carbon buid-up, discoloration, etc. you may be able to clean them and adjust the gap. also, very much sounds like a timing problem. the timing could be off just enough to permit the bike to start but will not accept throttle, idles rough, & small back-fires through the carbs. hope this helps
If any car backfires it is usually due to retarded timing, running lean or a problem in the valve train.
if it only backfires when shutting off, usually this means its getting to much gas!! if it backfires will running adjust carburater.
had same problem with 125 dirt bike that had been sitting for a year.....removed carb 'and found it clogged with residue . cleaned it and reinstalled...runs like a new one. hope this helps.
we had this problem. The dealer cleaned them and greased them and they have been working ever since
The carburetor needs to be removed, disassembled, cleaned, reassembled and replaced. If any gaskets tear in the process you will need a rebuild kit.
the seat on the exhaust valve is dirty so the valve does not seal it.... not sure how to clean it
better check over the fuel system carefully. doesn't sound like it's getting gas.
sparkplug wires could be shorting out or you may even have a cracked sparkplug. I had this same problem. it turned out the one of the wires was arcing out on the exaust manifold.
I have the same bike, same year. First I'd say, is it really backfiring (small explosions in the tailpipes) or more "popping" when you let off the gas? I think backfires might be more common on giving an engine gas, not letting up... Mine was popping (which I originally referred to as 'backfiring', as well), and the diagnoses was that the engine was running lean, and when I had the carbs cleaned, it went away completely.
running lean can cause your 400ex to backfire ..if it backfires on deceleration its lean ...if it pops on acceleration its running rich.====carb issues
No, I recommend go to a mechanic, chances are your firing order is out or running bit to much fuel
Needs a tune up? Bad timing?
