88 Chevy caprice you turn on headlights and the front runnig lights don't work take out the running light bulbs and the side marker lights come on?
You probably have a rusted or disconnected ground wire to the running lights and side markers.
Brake lights should NOT be effected by the headlights. Brake light function is completely independent of the headlights. Assuming you are not refering to the tail lights, or marker lights, which are supposed to come when the head lights are turned on. Not having brake lights when the head lights are on is a big safety problem and should be corrected.

On my 98 sunfire, the tail lights and marker lights only work if you turn on the headlights. The S-Type Headlight switch on the end of the turn signal stalk has several settings for headlight functions. The Auto setting turns the headlights on automatically in darkness, (and off in light), and the settings with longer and longer lines leave the lights on after you get out, for longer and longer times.
I have a 93 stang and have replaced all the front lights. I find it easiest to take the headlight out first. Unplug the headlight bulb from the housing and move it out of the way. The headlight is held in place by three bolts. 7/16" I think. Once you get the headlight out I find it easier to reach the bolts for the other lights. The side marker and turn signal lights each have…
