Check the water pump. If the thermostat is working properly then the next common problem would be a bad water pump.

Or, if everything else is operating properly, it could be the thermostat or a blocked radiator, but I'd focus on the thermostat first. Be certain that the engine is at normal operating temperature when looking to see if coolant is circulating. A properly operating thermostat will prevent the circulation of coolant while engine temperatures are below operating temperature.

no, check the coolant reservoir 1st, if its full then after car is at operating temp. look underneath and see if any coolant or water is on the ground below the water pump if so the weep hole is probably leaking on the water pump check the componet if all check out it maybe the thermostat fairly enxpensive to replace so i would replace the thermostat and check the temp again but if the water pump is leaking it needs to be replaced

The thermostat closes (preventing the circulation of cooling fluid through the radiator) while the coolant is below the setpoint. Once the fluid rises to the setpoint, the thermostat opens. This assures that the engine is operating at a specific temperature. Engines are far more efficient when operating at a higher temperature... so long as it isn't TOO high. Without a thermostat, the coolant constantly circulates through the radiator and cools as much as the radiator will allow.

The higher operating temperature is more efficient, but needs a good 16 psi at the cap to stay below boiling point. Any Auto Parts store can tell you the correct temperature thermostat for your Impala. Probably it requires a 195 degree thermostat. One thing for sure is no thermostat is not what you want. Running without a thermostat, will cause the engine to not reach full operating temperature. The engine will not perform to peak efficiency at below normal operating temperature. Normally that is around 220-230 Degrees. Your engine is computer controlled and the computer bases fuel/air mixture and timing on the engine temperature. Install the correct thermostat.

I had a similar issue one day, my friend mechanic advised that the thermostat had siezed, he removed the thermostat, cut the spring and re installed it, I have used it now for 4 months with no issues to date. Please check with a technician, as I reside on an Island that is constant 84 degrees and the engine does not really need a thermostat. As to update this, I have now used this car without the spring in the thermostat for nearly 2 years and without any issues, temp remains well below half way mark
