Cadbury is usually thought of as a UK (Australian) company, but Cadbury bars bought in the US are made in the US following the Cadbury recipe.
It was originally invented in the 1920s by the Hollywood Candy Co. It was then owned by a company called Leaf. Later through many hands in was purchased by Hershey's. Unfortunately this great candy was never actually produced by Hershey's but nevertheless they hold onto it and deny us the loyal fans who remember it so well.
Candy bars did not exist in 1940. In fact they were invented in 1943 as an offshoot of allied wartime research. However the discovery did not reach the public until after the end of the second world war due to wartime privations, arriving in US shops in 1947. Britain did not see the candy bar until later due to the existence of rationing into the 1950s. Additonally they were (are) not known as 'candy bars' in Britain, but rather 'Wonga Loads.'
Hershey's created "RationD" candy bars for the US army and by the end of 1945 was producing 24 million units per week. Between 1940 & 1945 it's estimated that 3,000,000,000 (three billion) bars were produced & distributed to military personnel worldwide.
His biography doesn't tell us that information.
There are many kinds of candies that have been around longer than Kit Kat. Kit Kats were invented in 1935. There were candy sticks and other kinds of candies available in the US in the 1800s.
This kind of candy is not easy to find in the US because this is imported. Your bet best is to stop by your local chocolate store to see what kind of imports they have and maybe place a special order if necessary.
Cotton candy
The US was involved in WWII which meant no toy production and very little candy was available for civilians.
