must be due to lack of oil due to worn oil seals. worn out bearings can be the culprit too..

YES you can, I have a 92 RS 5.0 and swapped a 4.32 rear end in with the rear disc brakes.

Not generally. If a differential is bad it will often make noise as it gets ready fail altoghether, but it doesn't affect the operation of the transmission.
It is around 92 dB.
