A = Axis, the major members of which were Germany, Italy, and Japan.

B = Battle of the Bulge, the name used to reference the German offensive from December 16, 1944 to January 25, 1945. It is also known as the Ardennes Offensive as it occurred in the Ardennes region of France, Belgium, and Luxembourg. The Bulge refers to the area of the Allied lines forced back by the Germans, litterally a bulge in the Allied line.

C = Churchill, Winston Churchill was the Prime Minister of Britian during WWII.

D = Dunkirk, Dunkirk is the the city in France where the British and French armies made their last stand against the Germans in 1940 and from which the British army (and as many of the French as could be included) were evacuated back to Britian.

E = Eisenhower, General Dwight D. Eisenhower was the Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe beginning December of 1943 when it was announced he would be in the position

F = Fairey, the name of the British aircraft corporation which built the Swordfish torpedo bomber biplane, the plane which succesfully attacked the Italian Navy during the Battle of Taranto (sinking or disabling three battleships and a cruiser with just twelve planes) and which damaged the Bismarck enough for the British surface ships to catch up to her and sink her.

G = Garbo, the alias of Juan Pujol Garcia who was a double agent for the Allies and helped to decieve the Germans as to the events leading up to and during D-Day

H = Hellcat, the Grumman F6F Hellcat fighter which was among those designed to counter the advantages of Japanese fighters

I = I-400, the designation for the aircraft carrier submarines in the Japanese Navy, the largest subs of the war able to carry three seaplanes in a unique water tight hangar

J = Julius, the first name of J Robert Oppenhimer, the scientific head of the Manhattan project

K = Kate, the Allied code name for the Japanese Nakajima B5N torpedo bomber

L = Laval, Pierre Laval was the head of the Vichy French government under Chief of State Philippe Pétain. Laval was executed for treason in 1945 for being part the French government which collabroated with the German occupation of France.

M = Monty, the nickname of Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery

N = Neptune, the code name for the intial phase of Operation Overlord. Operation Neptune began on D-Day

O = Obrest, the German military equivalent to the rank of Colonel

P = Philippe Pétain, the Chief of State of Vichy France, the goverment which collabroated the German occupation of France

Q = Queensland, Australia, the Japanese lauched attacks on North Queensland in 1942.

R = Ribbentrop, German Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop signed the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact with Soviet Foreing Minister Vyacheslav Molotov in 1939 which was supposed to be a non-aggression pact but effectively made Germany and Russia allies until tthe German invasion of Russia in 1941 (they did invade Poland together).

S = Stalin, Joeseph Stalin wasthe Premier of the Soviet Union during WWII

T = Truman, Harry S. Truman was a senator during most of the war who became the Vice President in 1945 (elected as such in 1944) under FDR and then became the President when FDR died

U = U-boat, German subs were called unterseeboot (undersea boat) which has been abbreviated U-boat.

V = Victory gardern, garden's planted by citizens in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia to reduce the strain on the food industry to supply food for both the soldiers and civilians

W = Whistling Death, the English translation of the Japanese nickname for the F4U Corsair

X = X-day the code name for what would have been day one of the invasion of the Japanese home islands during the purposed Operation Downfall

Y = Yalta, the Yalta Conference was where the big three (Churchill, Rooseverlt, and Stalin) came together to discuss post-war Europe

Z = Zumbach, Jan Zumbach lead the RAF's No. 303 Polish Fighter Squadron from 1942 to 1943 and prior to that was a a founding member of the squadron and took part in the Battle of Britian
