A 17 year old has one foot in adulthood and the other in childhood. You have to let her make her own decisions and even mistakes. Sometimes a mistake is the best way to learn. If she makes the decision to have sex, that is an adult decision. Make sure that you talk about the adult consequences of that decision - Birth Control or taking care of a child. You have the right to disagree, just make sure that she knows you still love her. If she gets pregnant, that isn't your legal responsibility. It's between her and the father. Of course, you might feel a moral obligation and that is another issue. If she insists on being sexually active talk to her a lot about good judgment, self respect, would she trust that guy to take care of her child, that sort of thing. Make sure she gets proper information on STD's and birth control. That is your responsibility as a monther. If she chooses to be sexually active and is careless or will not use birth control and gets pregnant, you have every right to make your own moral decision about what you should do or how much you should help her.
