there are several reasons but can I suggest.
1, Try double pressing the clutch pedal and see if this eases engaging the gear.
2. clearance on the clutch could do this but these are self adjusting so clutch may be at end of life. simple test is find a hill and as you are driving up engage Top Gear, accelerate and see if there is any slippage.
3. Linkage is unlikely as these cars are well made, what mileage has it done?
These principals can be adopted for most manual cars.
