Mandela was born in Mvezo in Transkei. He belongs to a branch of the Thembu dynasty which reigns in the Transkei Territories in the Cape Province in South Africa. On his mother's side there is also Khoisan ancestry. His great-grandfather, Ngubengcuka, ruled as king of the Thembu people. One of his sons, who was named Mandela, became Nelson's grandfather. Mandela's father, Gadla Henry Mphakanisywa, was chief of the town of Mvezo. Mandela's father had 4 wives and 13 children, 4 boys and 9 girls. Mandela was born to his third wife, Nosekeni Fanny. Mandela spent most of his childhood with his mother. He became the first member of his family to attend a school, where his teacher gave him the English name Nelson. When he was 9 his fater died of tuberculosis. After that Mandela attended a mission school. According to Thembu custom he was initiated at the age of 16. Mandela then completed his Junior Certificate in 2 years instead of the normal 3 years. After school Mandela began to study for a Bachelor in Arts at Fort Hare University. He was later asked to leave to university when he became involved in boycotting activities against the policies of the university.
