In 1516, Sir Thomas More wrote a book called Utopia. Later, in the 18th century, Robert Owens created this legendary society called New Harmony in Indiana and started this colony there. After about 2 years, the community crashed and burned because, well, there were all kinds of issues (manufacturing, labor, etc.)

The community in "The Giver" restricts their people from feeling in order to maintain control and prevent individuals from experiencing negative emotions or making choices based on those emotions. This control ultimately serves to keep the community functioning smoothly and in accordance with the leaders' vision of a utopian society.

Plato's idea of a perfect society was outlined in his book "The Republic," where he proposed a society governed by philosopher-kings and guided by the principles of justice, wisdom, and moderation. In this society, individuals would be assigned roles based on their abilities and interests, ensuring a harmonious and well-ordered community where everyone contributes to the common good. The society would prioritize education and philosophical contemplation as essential components of a virtuous life.
They are based on how society (i.e.: the community at-large) wishes them to act.
A utopia is kindof like a futuristic perfect society and a dystopia is a disliked bad society. They are both made up but can be based on something from the past.
