As I stated, the Black Ships was a generic name for western style blackish dark hulled sailing ships from the 15th century on, including Commodore Perrys squadron. Perry used no violence, but did imply it with a 73 gun "salute" of blanks when Japanese ships surrounded his squadron to force him to leave.
