The general purpose language is Nynorsk. Pronounced new-noshk or new-nawshk, it means 'new norwegian'. Previously, Norway had 3+ languages.

  1. Bokmal. Literally book-speak it was used as the written language.
  2. Riksmal. Literally government-speak it was almost pure Danish, but with a different accent.
  3. Landsmal. Literally country-speak it was a mishmash of numerous dialects from different areas of the country.

All four languages are still used, but Nynorsk is becoming dominant.
