The Juneau Icefield is 150 miles long north-to-south and feeds as many as 140 glaciers, 38 of which are considered large. The largest of these is the Taku Glacier with an estimated ice thickness of 4,500 feet. The glacier most easily accessible by the road system is the rapidly retreating Mendenhall Glacier, also one of the top tourist destinations in Alaska. The Eagle Glacier and Herbert Glacier are also located near the road system, though they require hikes through sometimes rugged terrain.Sources:(1) [I'm a local](2) Related Link #1 (see below)(3) Related Link #2(4) Related Link #3
As best can be determined, the Universe (as a whole) does not have consciousness. As such, the Universe lacks a capacity to feel any emotion, or to act upon any emotion it might be "feeling." In the absence of any evidence to the contrary, it is more likely that our Universe does not care. Our natural world most definitely does not develop in any way consistent with caring for anything. As an aside, I do a lot of hiking; and one of the wiser things I heard as I began to do long hikes is, "Nature doesn't care." Basically, it means that it is best to assume that the natural world we experience will NOT alter itself based simply on how much we are suffering, nor on any degree to which we don't "deserve" to suffer. It is thus a waste of psychological energy to bemoan that it is "unfair" for you to suffer while in nature, simply because our natural world does not act in a way that shows any degree of caring.
Contour maps are useful because it provides a relatively accurate measurement of altitude. Contour maps utilize contour lines to indicate different elevations. They identify the vertical and horizontal dimension of land surfaces or terrains. Contour maps are important because they accurately represent land form height as well as the watershed presence. Farmers can use this to plan how their fields will be plowed and planted. Hikers use them to plan hikes.
"Big" is a relative word. "Big" to me might be several days; to others the better part of a day. I can be chatty with friends and easily do 10 miles in less than 4 hours. Is 10 miles "big"? Many hikes average about that, give or take a few miles. Walmart has been selling a gadget you put on your pants belt loop that holds a water bottle, and then the backpack takes another 2 bottles. I'm a tea drinker and will drop a tea bag into the water and sip on herb teas while I hike. If I was going longer than a day, bring a water filter like Timberline and try it beforehand to be sure you are confident the stream water you will be using will not make you sick. Ah, and be sure you will indeed be hiking by a stream - much of the western US has been in a drought and not all the water sources indicated on a map actually have water! Foods that don't need to be cooked or are not fussy about temperature are good to bring. Depends on what you feel like eating that day. I'm partial to sandwiches with hummus and whatever I have in the house. Sometimes I pack my own trail mix, of sorts which may have dehydrated fruit or veggies or seeds or nuts all mixed up in a baggie. You don't really feel hungry if you eat nutrtionally dense food.
The spelling is "hiker" (one who hikes, walking or climbing especially in rural settings).
