A steam engine is a heat engine. A steam engine uses boiling water to produce mechanical work. It uses the steam from the boiling water as its working fluid.
Steam boilers work by boiling water to generate steam. The steam then is used to heat the engine.
By using a heat source to boil water.
The steam engine helped to power the Industrial Revolution. Before steam power, most factories and mills were powered by water, wind, horse, or man. Water was a good source of power, but factories had to be located near a river.
Either heat air and force through a turbine, or heat water into steam (and use a turbine or a steam engine). Then connect to a generator.
When water heats up to the point where it starts to boil, steam will descend from the water. So, water and high temperatures create steam. But, since other liquids also can create steam, I would say that if you boil a common liquid you will get steam.
Some older ships used the power of steam to propel them through the water. A boiler is used to heat water to make steam which is passed to a steam engine which turns the propeller. In ships like the Titanic the boiler was fuelled by coal but later steam ships used gas to heat the water.
A steam-powered car does run on water but it also needs the fuel to burn to heat the water into steam! Steam-cars generally used vapourised paraffin as fuel, as do most modern versions.
The function of the steam engine is to convert heat energy into motive power, mechanical energy. A boiler generates steam by the application of heat, that steam is then expanded (losing its heat energy) into a steam engine which moves a load (locomotive, line shaft, pump, machine, generator, etc.).
