The Index

The list of forbidden books was officially known as,'Index Librorum Prohibitorum' which translates into English as List of prohibited books.

The first list was compiled by Pope Paul IV in 1559. It was revised an updated over the years, the final edition (the 20th) was published in 1948.

The list of prohibited books was formally abolished in 1966 by Pope Paul VI.

It's just the Catholic Church, not the Roman Catholic Church. Roman is an epithet first commonly used in England after the protestant revolt to describe the Catholic Church. It is rarely used by the Catholic Church.

.

INDEX LIBRORVM PROHIBITORVM, Index of Prohibited Books. The last edition of which was issued in 1948 (you may view it at the link below. Pope Paul VI, when he reorganized the Holy Office at the end of 1965 did not put the Index on their list of duties . Bishops, and lay insitututes still offer guidance on movies that are considered offensive . The Legion of Decency BANNED outright ( for Catholics) GREASE and Odd Couple- the film versions. the latter because of its strongly implied Homosexual subplot.

Bishops and the Pope expose books that are fraudulent, teaching heresy, or attacking the Church. They kindly ask you to not read them or as in the case of today's market: do not buy them thus supporting the author financially.

If you want to know which contemporary books fit this description, there's a number of good places to start looking into this. First, talk to your Parish Priest as which books are popular in one part of the world may be unheard of in others. Secondly, some groups like the United States Council of Catholic Bishops have web-sites that review media.

from Wikipedia:

On 7 December 1965, Pope Paul VI issued the Motu Proprio "Integrae servandae" that re-constituted the Holy Office as the "Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith." The Index was not listed as being a part of the newly constituted Congregation's competence, leading to questioning whether it still was. This question was put to Cardinal Ottaviani-Pro-Prefect of the Congregation-who responded in the negative. The Cardinal also indicated in his response that there was going to be a change in the Index soon.

A Notification of 14 June 1966 from the Congregation, which was published on the 15 June 1966 issue of the Vatican's newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, announced that, while the Index maintained its moral force, in that it taught Christians to beware, as required by the natural law itself, of those writings that could endanger faith and morality, it no longer had the force of ecclesiastical positive law with the associated penalties.

AnswerSince the 16th century the Catholic Church had kept what was simply known as "The Index", a short form for the Index Librorum Prohibitorum or "List of Prohibited Books". The Church sought to censor those books which It judged to contain heresy, immorality or scandal and which It did not see as fit for reading by the faithful. Condemned books ranged from everything to heretical theologies to modern philosophers to novels, such as, for example, "The Three Musketeers" (as Aramis was a runaway priest who solicited a lady).

The Index was discontinued in 1966 at the prompting of pope Paul VI in the spirit of Vatican II although he asked that Catholics observe the spirit of the Index and not seek out scandalous reading material.

Why has the Catholic Church banned the Rotary organization?

.Catholic AnswerThere was some confusion in the first half of the twentieth century in which the Rotary go confused with the Masons. Masonry has always been condemned by the Catholic Church for any number of reasons, and for a long while the Rotary was getting most of its members from the Masons. Catholics are forbidden to join any organization that is secret and holds its members to oaths above their Christian duties to God and the Church. I don't know about the current status about the Rotary, but I do know that they are no longer associated with the Masons and that there is no condemnation from that angle.
