Don't freak out. Go get a lawyer. If you can't afford one, they will assign one to you. If you are inoocent, then there is no reason why you should be put in jail. That's the beauty of the law system. Innocent until proven guilty. Unless this guy has some good, hard evidence saying that you stole the stuff, or and eyewitness, it will just be your word against his. Try to get some people to back you up. by the way, don't freak out, or say anything that could be held against you. His lawyer will dwell upon every word that comes out of your mouth.
