Since your talking about the American Civil War the difference between the North and South. The South were called the Confederates and they wanted slavery. The North went against slavery and they were called the Union. The issue of the Civil War had more to do about freedom to choose. Slavery was simply the "issue of the day" much as the "green movement" is today. The south believed they had the right to lead their lives as they saw fit...ie. to own slaves etc.. The North believed that government should impose limitations on individuals ie.. slaves could not be owned. Interestingly enough, history books forget to tell us that slaves were also kept in Northern states too and that slaves were not only black, but Indian ,too.
Former slaves believed that after years of hard labor the South owed them land. This belief was not granted by the South; and many slaves rented small homes and went back to work for paid wages on the plantations.
