The bulge
The Battle of the Somme was originally a planned, offensive assault from the British and French commanders with hopes of gaining territory and destroying German manpower. Before they could launch the attack, however, the French city of Verdun became heavily bombarded by the Germans. This caused the Battle of the Somme to be executed earlier than planned with a new objective of diverting pressure from the Battle of Verdun and destroying the German forward defences.

Luxembourg is a constitutional monarchy with a Grand Duke as head of state and an elected Chamber of Deputies which provides members of the government. Luxembourg used to be in 'personal union' with the Netherlands whereby the King of the Netherlands was also Grand Duke of Luxembourg. In 1890 Queen Wilhemina became head of state of the Netherlands but was prohibited from inheriting the Luxembourg crown as she was female, so Luxembourg had it's own Grand Duke from a German Princely family. In WWI, Luxembourg although neutral was violated by German troops and Luxembourgers died trying to repel them. In WWII, Luxembourg was absorbed into the German Reich as Hitler believed the Luxembourgers to be German. The Nazis demolished the WWI war memorial in Luxembourg City. Many Luxembourgers joined resistance movements in WWII. Luxembourg is a member of NATO and is a founding member of the European Union.
The "bulge", as seen on a map of the areas of control by the Allies and the Germans, was an area of the front that became extended (bulged) into the mostly American lines in the Ardennes region of Belgium and Luxembourg. The Germans had hoped to break through to the river Meuse and surround various Allied army units. The fighting from December 16, 1944 to January 7, 1945 was the last major German offensive of the war, and resulted in the abandonment of large numbers of their tanks and other motorized vehicles due to lack of fuel. --- The 'bulge' was the frontline that protruded out in the region of the Ardennes Mountains (specifically around the town of Bastogne). The Allied forces at that time had control of the area and Nazi forces sought to take the region, as the town of Bastogne gave full access to the 8 supply routes in the region (all 8 roads came together in Bastogne). The Germans used the 'bulge' against us by cutting it off at the sides and surrounding the Allied troops within it.
Benedict Arnold's accomplishment was that during the Revolutionary War he was a general of the Continental Army and became a hero when he led the attack at the Battle of Saratoga. After his defection to the British Army, he was given a commission as a brigadier general.
