He continued the struggle for independence after Hidalgo's capture and execution in 1811; however, he himself was captured and executed in 1815 after a bloody campaign. Morelos' Lieutenant, Vicente Guerrero (1782-1831) was finally able to successfully consolidate Mexico's independence from Spain in 1821.
