How many cars and trucks paid the toll? Well, 23 of course!! Oh, you want to know how many of each. The algebraic way would be: Let x = the number of cars Let y = the number of trucks Total vehicles is 23, therefore x + y = 23 Also due to the rates and total money collected 1.25x + 2y = 40 If we multiply the first equation by 2 we get: 2x + 2y = 46 then take away the first equation 1.25x + 2y = 40, we get: 0.75x + 0y = 6 Therefore x = 8 and y = 15 Now, the faster commonsense way would be to imagine if all the vehicles were trucks, then $46 would have been raised, which is $6 too much. For every truck replaced with a car, $0.75 less is raised. $6 divided by $0.75 equals 8. Now I'm going back to my economics homework. Cya. Rob in DC.
