The way I best understood specific gravity is that it's just something's density compared to water at a specific temperature. Water here is the reference.

You can find the value of specific gravity by dividing it's density by the density of water. The density of water is 1.00 g/cm3 . This means that a specific gravity of 1.030 means that it's density is 1.030 g/cm3 (1.030 * 1.00 g/cm3 ).

Keep in mind that specific gravity is simply a ratio. You should not be surprised then that it is unitless. g/cm3 divided by g/cm3 is 1, yielding no units.

When I learned this in school, I felt that they just skipped over these details. Hope it helps!

Normal values are between 1.020 to 1.028.

Note: Normal value ranges may vary slightly among different laboratories. Talk to your doctor about the meaning of your specific test results.

increased urine specific gravity may be due to:

  • Addison's disease (rare)
  • Dehydration
  • Diarrhea that causes dehydration
  • Glucosuria
  • Heart failure (related to decreased blood flow to the kidneys)
  • Renal arterial stenosis
  • Shock
  • Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH)

Decreased urine specific gravity may be due to:

  • Aldosteronism (very rare)
  • Excessive fluid intake
  • Diabetes insipidus - central
  • Diabetes insipidus - nephrogenic
  • Renal failure
  • Renal tubular necrosis
  • Severe kidney infection (pyelonephritis)

Additional conditions under which the test may be performed:

  • Complicated UTI (pyelonephritis)
  • High blood sodium level
  • Low blood sodium level
  • Excessive urination

It means that any container full of that substance, no matter how big or small the

container is, weighs 1.035 times as much as it would weigh if the same container

were full of pure water instead.

I would venture to say that even a SG of 1.020 or greater is a marker of dehydration.

What does specific gravy of 1.015 in urinalysis mean?

Urine specific gravity is a test that measures the chemical components found in the urine. Normal values are between 1.000-1.030. So your specific gravity is considered normal range.

You are dehydrated and you need to increase your fluid intake.

It means that it is nearly pure water with very, very little else in it.

What does it mean when a urine test states you have high urine content?

If you mean like high amount of urine: Polyuria. If you mean like high amount of particles inside the urine: High specific gravity = your urine may have high levels of glucose, protein, bilirubin, urobilinogen, or/and a lot of mucus, crystals, bacteria, and tissue/blood cells.

What does the medical abbreviation sg ur mean?

SG ur may represent specific gravity of urine, a typical measure taken during urinalysis.

What does 1.015 specific gravity in urine mean?

It means that any volume of that urine weighs 1.015 times as much as the same volume of pure water weighs. A properly trained physician or medical laboratory technician can often identify and evaluate several normal or abnormal conditions based on the measured specific gravity of an individual's urine.

Your specific gravity test was low what does it mean?

Before answering your question, do you produce large amount of urine (polyuria)? LOW Specific Gravity test (1.003-1.009 [I think]) means that you have low amount of particles inside your urine. It is clinical significance serious, it may indicate type I diabetes. (you also may have polyuria) If it is just normal, you just drinking a lot of water (you also may have polyuria)

What does gravity spicific mean?

Perhaps you mean "specific gravity". That refers to an object's density, compared to the density of a reference subtance (usually water). For example, if iron has 8 times the density of water, then its specific gravity is said to be 8.
