If you use apple, the easiest way is to right click on the application and select the window you can't find. If that doesn't work, you may have spaces on and it is in another space. For an old apple, go to settings, where a category should be labeled expose and spaces. Open that category, find out the controls for your spaces, open all space view, and click on the space that has your window. Drag it to your used space by clicking and holding the window, then change spaces while still holding the window. If you have a new version, then open mission control, and look at the top of your screen. If you have spaces (technically not spaces any more), then do the same thing as you do for the old version. You can turn them of in the new version by hovering over the right corner of a space and clicking the x mark. In the old version, turn it of by going to expose and space settings and turning it of from there. If spaces didn't work, then right click or click and don't let go on the application the window belongs to, in dock. If the window didn't exactly belong to a application, then skip this step. A menu should appear, including a list of the windows open. Click on your window. Also try clicking show all windows and selecting yours. If that doesn't work, the final possibility is that you may have minimized it. Go to dock and starting from the right, look for a mini version of your window. Click on it once you find it.
For Windows: The only possibility that I know of is that you minimized it. Click on the application that the window belonged to.
