There are several categories of skills that veterinarians need to have, including technical, business and financial and communications.

Technical skills are the competencies taught at veterinary schools and include abilities such as auscultation (listening to the internal organs through a stethoscope), palpation, venupuncture, etc.

Business and financial skills include developing a budget, writing a business plan, determining hiring and firing practices, scheduling support staff, etc.

Communication skills are probably the most difficult skills to learn and include active listening, discussing difficult diagnoses, educating clients, etc.

The ability to observe and communicate are two vital abilities one must have in order to be a successful veterinarian. Motor skills and a high intellectual capacity are important as well.
