Abu Dhabi does have significant oil reserves. It has about 95% of the oil reserves in the UAE. Dubai has only about 5% oil reserves. Dubai gets most of their money from trading and tourism. The Emirate of Abu Dhabi has invested heavily in the Emirate of Dubai to ensure its success as a business centre for the lower Gulf region.

Abu Dhabi has substantial holdings throughout the world and is now believed to generate more money from investment income than from crude oil production. It is expected that the oil reserves of Dubai will be exhausted in less than ten years whilst the reserves of Abu Dhabi will last more than fifty years.

How much do revenues from petroleum and natural gas contribute to Dubai's economy?

Suprisingly, not very much. The two large emirates of the United Arab Emirates are Dubai and Abu Dhabi. According to Wikipedia, oil revenues are less than 6%, with oil production at 50,000 to 70,000 barrels of oil per day. In contrast, Abu Dhabi receives about 85% of its revenue from oil. Trade and tourism are a large part of Dubai's economy. See related links.

What caused the Dubai crisis?

In Dubai (Shariya) Law it is an offence not only to miss a mortgage payment but even to ask for a delay. As the offence is instantly punishable by imprisonment The World credit crisis meant many expatriates fled the country rather than admit they had a problem. Paradoxically Dubai World were forced to ask for a delay in making interest payments on their lending. As they are in the property business this created a self perpetuating spiral with properties falling vacant at a time when Dubai Worlds' cashflow needed property take-up the most. Abu-Dhabi has previously provided a degree of "guarantee" to the Dubai economy but this time they have been slow to step in. Hence confidence is low & the pack of cards is starting to wobble.

The same Arabic root word gives us "Salaam alaykum," ("Peace be with you"), the universal Muslim greeting.Who is a Muslim?: A person who believes in and consciously follows Islam is called a Muslim, also from the same root word.
