You must stop,shift into neutral, then shift into 4x4 high/low and back into drive. To disengage, stop again, shift to neutral, then shift back in 2x4 and drive, for safety you should reverse about 10-15 feet to help disengage the shaft.
If you're in 4WD low, then the vehicle needs to be put in neutral before you can switch it back to 4WD HIGH or AWD.
There is a rely on the drivers side fender. It is the second relay from the front of the car. If it won't engage usually it is that there is too low or too high pressure in the system. Most of the times it it just low on freon and a sensor will not allow the compressor to turn on.
It's a cycling clutch compressor. It disengages to keep system pressure where it should be. When it reaches the high point, it disengages. Then it engages again when it reaches the predetermined low point.

A refrigerant compressor will be hot when running whether or not the charge is too high or too low. If the charge is too low, the compressor will cycle on and off. If too high the compressor may not run at all.

You don't need to engage the compressor clutch to recharge the system. In fact, you shouldn't engage it without refrigerant and oil in it, because the refrigerant carries the compressor oil in order to lubricate the compressor. But, to answer your question, you disconnect the low pressure switch, and run a jumper wire between the two female ends of the connector.
Refrigerant enters the compressor inlet as a low pressure vapor. The compressor increases the pressure, and discharges it as a high pressure vapor.
