One must understand the "karma siddhaanta" Karmic theory of Hinduism to understand salvation. What ever one does (good or bad) with an intention of some return, he gets merit or demerit. As long as one carry merit or demerit he has to take birth (which ever form )to consume it. It might take many lives to consume. However in every life, if he keeps on accumulating, he then has to keep coming back (rebirth). Only way is to do ones duty for god with out any expectation, with complete detachment only then he wont accumulate or generate any merit or demerit. Moment he does not have any "karma" to consume, he then gets salvation. Another way is to remember god at the moment of death would liberate him and he gets salvation.
