U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket
It is strongly advised that you wear a life jacket while wakeboarding though it is not required in some areas. Many more experienced riders wear non coast guard approved vest. These vest still provide some flotation but not as much as a normal coast guard approved jacket. They are wore to allow the rider more flexibility.

No- Inflatable 'water wings' are more of a toy than a life saving device. They can easily pop or come off a child's arm. A life jacket is the best protection for your child in (or near) the water. However, there currently is a coast guard approved product similar to water wings. They are filled with styrofoam and attached to a belt that goes around the child's chest. Which solves the problem of the wings popping or falling off. A life jacket is still recommended. Make sure it is sized correctly and not faded or torn.
