Six Sigma was created by Motorola, USA in 1986. The head designer was Motorola Vice President and Senior Quality Assurance Manager, Bill Smith. He designed the process over a series of years based on different studies of the works of Walter A. Shewhart @ Bell Telephone and Kaoru Ishikawa.
After trying to convince upper management to impliment his new process for a while, Motorola began using the Six Sigma method. Through this method the manufacturing industry would redefine itself by being able to finally quantify results rather than measuring results "hypothetically."
In 1988 Motorola earned the coveted Malcolm Balridge National Quality Award. This honor would not be won by Motorola again until 2002.
