The first appearance of the word "heart" in the New Testament is in Matthew 5:8 - Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God. The word translated "heart" is "kardia," from which our modern word "cardiac" derives. Many koine Greek words had multiple meanings; "kardia" refers to both the literal bodily organ AND (more often) "the center and seat of spiritual life; the soul or mind as the source and seat of thoughts, passions and desires, appetites, affections and purposes." This word, or a compound form of it [examples: "sklerokardia" ("hardness of heart," in Matthew 19:8), "kardiognostes" ("knower of the hearts," in Acts 1:24)], is by far the most commonly used in the New Testament and most often concerns one's attitude toward something, as in Mark 2:8 -But immediately, when Jesus perceived in His spirit that they reasoned thus within themselves, He said to them, "Why do you reason about these things in your hearts?"
