The term "rickets" is used almost exclusively to refer to a deficiency disease in children caused by a shortage of vitamin D, which causes the bones to develope abnormally. This is because the body cannot properly metabolize calcium without sufficient vitamin D.

Adults might also have vitamin D deficiencies and calcium absorption problems, but the bones are already formed, and rickets refers to the formative years - that is, childhood.

A person using the term "adult rickets" is probably stretching the meaning for lack of a better term.

The condition of adult rickets is also known as osteomalacia. Adults rarely get rickets, which is a vitamin D disorder which leads to softening or weakening of the bones. It is most commonly found in people that receive little sunlight (live in extreme far north or south poles) or have an extreme vegetarian/vegan diet. There are many other disorders more common in adults that have similar symptoms. Scoliosis, fibromyalgia, and osteoporosis.

What diet supplement would help to prevent rickets?

Vitamin D supplements help prevent rickets if given along with breastfeeding for infants. If you are asking for an adult then there really is no way to prevent rickets because you would already have it. Rickets is considered a Vitamin D deficiency and most of the time develops in kids under the age of 5. Vitamin D would also be helpful for people who already have rickets by keeping the symptoms at bay.

Rickets is caused by a lack of certain minerals in bones due to insufficient levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood. Sufficient vitamin D in the diet is essential for the maintenance of normal calcium and phosphorus levels.

What is rickets what cause it and how to prevent it?

Rickets means abnormal and soft bones. You have less amount of calcium deposited in the bones. Rickets is caused by deficiency of vitamin D. Most of the vitamin D is produced, when you are exposed to morning sun light. You get rickets in case of children. You get osteomalacia in case of adult due to same reason. You have to expose the baby in morning sun light. Most of the physicians will prefer to give vitamin D supplementation to the child. You can give 60,000 I U of vitamin D, say monthly or once in two months, till the condition is cured. If baby is not drinking enough milk, you should give extra 'calcium' supplement.
