If you want to be a chef, you need to get a job in a restaurant before you go to school. Going to school before working in the industry is the biggest mistake most aspiring chefs make.
I worked for many years as a chef before my back gave out so I think I'm qualified to give my opinion of the field.
It's hot, dirty and stressful. You can expect to work at any hour of the day depending on what you are cooking. Some days a 15 hour day is not out of the question. Very few places have sick days but most have vacation. You must be able to work nights and weekends and forget about family functions.
Starting pay is minimum wage but it does go up with experience. In a good house, line cooks will earn between $8 and $16 an hour.
My best advice to you is get a part time job in a kitchen and check it out. Yes, it can be hell, but if you love it, it's the best job in the world and one that really cannot be outsourced! * 1 year ago
Well Im have been a chef for eight years and i absolutly love it! Here are some pros and cons in my opinion Pros 1. You can impress your customers (its always fun to do) 2. You get to be very creative and apply what you already know to make new recipies 3. Its always fun to work with other chefs 4. You learn so much!!! Cons 1. It can get stressful when theres a certain time 2. I hate when im working in a messy kitchen! 3. Somtimes others chefs dont work so hard and that gets annoying
The pressure of running an industrial kitchen can be very high. The hours can be long and holidays and weekends off are very rare. It is said that you must love to cook before deciding to become chef and that is very true. The road to becoming a chef is not an easy one take. Wages are not very high when you begin and that love of cooking could be all you have to keep you on way to becoming a chef. For an excellent overview of the challenges (and the underbelly) of the business, see the link below. It's a terrific book by the well-known and pretty nasty chef Anthony Bourdain.
Well you make a lot of money. I think that it would really depend if you love to cook. But if you love your family it wouldn't be a good idea. Because you would have to work on hoildays.
