Zip disks are considered obsolete these days, as all their advantages have been superseded by CD-RW and DVD-RW drives.

Back when zip disks were common, they would have most likely been compared to floppy disks, over which their advantages were higher storage capacity and higher read/write speed.

It has very limited storage capacity. Most zip disks have a capacity of either 100 MB or 250 MB while 750 MB variations are rarer and can only be used in internal zip drives. Additionally, zip disks and drives are fairly expensive in comparison to their capacity and they have a tendency for mechanical failure due to moving parts.

What are a the specification limits of an Iomega Zip Disk 100, 250, or 700 MB? For example it looks as if stored files are very small (1 to 3 KB), the Zip directory will allow only 170 files, even though plenty of storage space remains. When you reach this limit on a 100, copy the 170 files on the 100 to a 250, then try adding the 171st file to the 250, you are unable to do so.

the disks themselves cost alot more than DVD's or CDR's.

not many computers madehave Zip Drives especially now..

so you will need a portable type zip drive to use it on many machines

and will will have to carry a hard drive sized box with you everywhere you go!

they are pretty pointless now with the advent of DVD's!!

No advantages lots of disadvantages, a no brainer really...dont bother with one!

They are better then a Floppy disk though!

A ZIP disk is a small portable storage medium, either 100 MB or 250MB depending on formatting. Its from the Iomega company. For a few years in the late 1990s, almost every computer you bought would have one of these. with the advent of thumb drives, cd/dvd burners, cheap portable drives... the ZIP disk has fallen out of use for the most part. It was magnetic media, but not technically a floppy disk because the disk inside was quite rigid, much like a hard drive.
