The US Air Force F-100 Super Sabre had been deployed to Thailand prior to October 1961, to provide close air support in South Vietnam. The Super Sabre bombed targets in Cambodia, Laos, South Vietnam, and North Vietnam until it was replaced by the F-105 Thunderchief, which in turn was later replaced by the F-4 Phantom II. But, the Super Sabre might hold the record of ANY US warplane for steady combat service...10 years! 1961 through 1971.
Over 7 million tons of bombs were dropped in Vietnam, more than twice as many as were dropped in all of WWII. Bearing in mind, that Japan never received more than 400,000 tons of bombs, as Japan wasn't heavily bombed until the B-29 Superfortress came on line in 1944 (Japan, being part of a long range war; couldn't be reached by conventional bombers). Germany was a bomber war almost from the beginning, since it was a close range war (just across the English Channel).
The most famous air campaigns of the air war in Vietnam were:
1. Operation Rolling Thunder launched in 1965 thru 1968
2. Operation Linebacker in May 1972
3. Operation Linebacker in December 1972 (also called the Christmas Bombing)

When historians state that the war divided the nation; they pretty well mean that it split the nation...in half.
