When the cotton gin was invented this sent the rate of slavery up. The Southern planters found they needed the labor to grow more cotton. This was wrong, but it is what happened and as it became entrenched in the southern society it became a way of life for many southern colonies. For the southerners it was an economic issue that they rationalized with various sources including the bible.

The Southerners feared that their rich southern way of life would end.
