It use to be that Western Canada had a substancial Pine forest. Mostly because the cold winters killed off the northern pine beetles. Now that winters here are not so cold anymore the pine beetle's population is exploding and the pine forests are dying off at a terrible pace. They are being replaced by more southern spieces.
