After running completely out of gas what causes a 1988 Ford Ranger 6-cylinder to start but almost immediately stop like it ran out of gas and then not start until after it sits for a few minutes?

Might have picked up some dirt when it ran out of gas--I am of the understanding that there is a "sock" type filter in the tank-might be plugged from debris at bottom of tank
