It is possible that your ignition switch is loose or out of adjustment. They used to be located above the brake pedal on or near the bottom of the steering column.
Look in your manual. Make sure the emergency brake is on. Depress the brake. Remove the small rectangular transmission release cover on the top of the steering wheel cover with a screwdriver. Use your ignition key to depress the release while shifting into neutral. You can then start the car and it should shift.
If the car is not in park, it wont release the key. If it is in park, there is a little switch underneath the prndl indicator that is bad, causing the car to not release your key.

Move the steering wheel slightly and the key should come out.
This is called modulation.
The key feature would be the fact that a 1966 Camaro doesn't exist.

make sure it is COMPLETY in park. Sometimes it will not release the key unless it is totally "locked" down.
It is next to the backspace key below the underscore, so it can be reached without shifting.
