Paul von Hindenberg (1847-1934) commanded the German armies under Kaiser Wilhelm II during World War 1, and was President of the Weimar Republic (and its successor, the German Reich) from May 12, 1925 until his death on August 2, 1934. As the last German Chancellor to serve under Hindenburg, Hitler assumed power upon Hindenburg's death.
