After surgery, depending on placement of the device, your shoulder will be in pain. There might be some numbness from the local anaesthesia. You also shouldn't life your arm past your shoulder but you can still use your hand and partially your arm

Has anyone had burning numbness in hand after carpal tunnel surgery?

Yes. Since immediately following my CT surgery, my 2 middle fingers have been numb on the inside of the fingers, they tingle and burn and are unbelievably sensitive. I get severe pain now that I didnt have before on the back of my hand - feels like it is on fire. Also at the same time will have stabbing burning pain in my upper arm near my shoulder - this is the problem I had before all this. Its not *quite* as bad as it was - but still bad enough to have me eating percocets daily - mainly at night.
