Roanoke is located along the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Northwest region of Virginia. It is approximately a 2 hour drive from Greensboro, North Carolina and a 3 hour drive to Richmond, Virginia. It is the largest city in the Roanoke Valley area. Roanoke was originally called Big Lick until it changed names in 1882. Roanoke was a stop on the Virginia Railway which made it very attractive to manufacturers and businesses. Coal was the first main business for the city and the area started to grow rapidly. Though the city was known for its industrial rail stop, it has not had passengers trains for over twenty years. The economy of Roanoke is pretty stable. There are quite a few large corporations that have headquarter buildings or plants in the area. Some of these are General Electric, Carilon Health System, Advance Auto Parts, Elizabeth Arden, and many more. The regional offices for Kroger Grocery Stores are also located in Roanoke. The cost of living in Roanoke is pretty average and most people say it is a great place to raise a family. Roanoke has its share of festivals each year that draws in many visitors to the area. Some of these are the Henry Street Festival, the Big Lick Blues Festival, a Chili Cook off Festival, and Festival in the Park. There are plenty of cultural and historical venues in Roanoke as well. Make sure you stop at the Science Museum of Western Virginia and the Hopkins Planetarium. There is also Taubman Museum of Art, the History Museum of Western Virginia, and the Virginia Museum of Transportation. The Transportation Museum actually has some restored steam locomotives as well as items from the aviation field. It is definitely the right place to bring your family. Children love to see the historic modes of transportation that once were all we had. Dining out in Roanoke is easy to do. Being a large city it has all the popular fast food, chain restaurants, and specialty restaurants. Bars and pubs are scattered throughout the city as well. Be sure to try Blue’s BBQ on Market Street for some great american BBQ. Their ribs are outstanding. If you are in the mood for some exceptional French cooking, try Tony Pope Bistro on Crystal Spring Avenue. For italian cuisine you will have many choices. Carraba’s is always a hit, no matter what city you are in. They are located on Valley View Blvd.
