Donitz was saved from the hangman's noose by a document introduced by his attorney, and signed by US Admiral Chester Nimitz, which permitted US submarine attack without warning on Japanese merchant shipping. Donitz was still found guilty, but he received the lightest sentence and was released after ten years. As in all theaters of the war, there were atrocities on both sides in the Atlantic, but the Kreigsmarine U-boats mostly fought with honor and according to the rules of war.
