George Everest
He was Surveyor General to India and the first person to measure the height of Everest. His name was actually pronounced Eve-rest but Everest has stuck. In Tibetan the mountain is called Chomolungma (Goddess Mother of the Earth) and in Nepalese Sagamatha (or that may be the other way around).
