It is a work of fiction. It was done as a Broadway Play, a novelized book- written from the viewpoint of the detective assigned to the case- and later a motion picture. The movie and play changed things around and set the whole tale in Canada. There have been arguments the story was in part loosely based on the so-called Rochester incident in the New York State city of that name. The Rochester incident, involving a rape of a nun, was a shock item almost on the level of the Manson Murders when it occured. People talked about it evasively- the Rochester incident, that Horrible thing where a nun was raped in a convent! Happened around l977(?)
