Most states require that assets which were acquired during a marriage by the joint efforts of the couple be split equally because both contributed to building up the assets. Even if one earned more than the other, perhaps the lower earner gave up opportunities to support the career of the higher earner.
Assets which either of them possessed before their marriage, or which they directly inherited, are not split between the parties.
